Obituary for Claudine Wiggins

Claudine left this world on April 30, 2019 to be with her Lord and his angels, as well as with her deceased family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Malory King; brothers, Ronnie and Jerry; and son, Mark.

Claudine was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 12, 1934. Most of her youth was spent in Texarkana where she graduated from Texas High School in 1952. She and Bill were married in Texarkana October 11, 1953.

She was employed in various positions in her early life. Much of her time was spent raising and caring for sons Mark and Jay. In addition she was involved in many ways with arts and creative crafts. However, much of her time was devoted to her church, where in addition to holding several responsible positions, she was a youth and children Sunday school teacher for 50 years. She was one of the leaders of youth mission trips every summer to Donna, Texas. She was also a sponsor every year during the 1970’s and 1980’s of youth spring break ski trips to New Mexico and Colorado. She became a very good skier and went on family ski trips every year. She was also an excellent water skier.

Claudine loved and was blessed to travel extensively over much of the world. She shared this joy by going to various schools in the area giving slide presentations to the children so that they could see how people in other parts of the world lived.

She was involved in many organizations such as Beta Sigma Phi, where she shared lots of good times and laughs with the other ladies. She was also in the West Columbia study club and the Chamber of Commerce. Claudine was very involved in the early years of the San Jacinto Festival. Taking visitors and locals on guided tours of southern Brazoria during the festival was one of her favorite activities.

Claudine loved everyone. She was never heard to say a bad word about anyone. She was a friend to all.

Unfortunately, her recent years were clouded by the destructive Alzheimer’s disease. Even that horrible, terminal disease never caused her personality to change. She handled it with as much grace and dignity as possible.

Claudine is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill; son, Jay Wiggins; granddaughters, Heather and Hannah; daughter-in-law, Anna Sharp Wiggins; special nieces, Cecilia Tucker (Tommy) and Elizabeth Landry; loving aunts, Wanda Poda Loe and Derlene Wingert; along with many cousins in North Texas and North Louisiana.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in West Columbia with Rev. Bob Flowers officiating. Burial will follow at Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Baker Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Serving as pallbearers will be Tommy Tucker, Jimmie Jordan, Gene Hightower, Mike Henderson, Louis Moran, and Jim Holland. Honorary pallbearers will be the ladies of her chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 226 S. Broad West Columbia, Texas 77486 or to Central Emergency Ambulance Service, 400 N. 13th Street West Columbia, Texas 77486.
